Holly creates embroidered works inspired by nature, the female form, and portraiture, blending representation and abstraction to explore the resilience of nature within urban spaces.
Holly Allan is an artist based in London, specialising primarily in the art of embroidery.
She earned her BA Hons in Illustration and Visual Media from London College of Communication, UAL in 2017, and currently operates from her home studio in London. Drawing inspiration from a wide spectrum, encompassing nature, the female form, and portraiture, Holly finds solace and expression in the intricate and contemplative realm of embroidery. Through this medium, she conveys her unique perspective on her surroundings.
Navigating between representation and abstraction, Holly’s figurative pieces reinterpret the concept of the Vitruvian man, casting the idealised human form as a woman in her full splendour. These portrayals, crafted with delicate thread-work, capture the female form in graceful, powerful poses, accentuated by meticulously designed geometric patterns that harmonise with the contours of femininity.
Holly’s abstract creations draw inspiration from the interplay between urban landscapes and the relentless force of nature. Despite humanity’s efforts to distance itself from nature, it inevitably finds its way back. Nature’s resilience is exemplified by weeds emerging from pavement cracks and plants reclaiming walls. In this context, Holly weaves her threads akin to tendrils or roots, entwining them around and through architectural structures. Her work celebrates the symbiotic dance between human ingenuity and nature’s enduring spirit.
