Photo London 2024

“Night Light” celebrates the youth, joy, love, hedonism and glamour of contemporary culture. The pictures are representative of the London zeitgeist, and of the communities which inhabit it. Though the work we delve into a world of human pleasure, solidifying the idea of Freud’s pleasure principle, in reference to the early psychoanalytic theory of personality. The pictures reflect on the driving force of our id, which seeks out immediate gratification of our carnal needs, wants, and desires. The images capture extremely dynamic compositional moments. James D. Kelly’s work is an ode to the beauty of life in the contemporary, the images are portrayals of our common cultural and historical heritage and the moments of elation which provoke it and define it. James’s compositions echo the ones found in Bernini’s Baroque sculptures, the figures in the works are moving with great strength. The images are portrayals of the myths and legends of the now.

James D.Kelly about the work: “I am so thrilled to have my first solo show at Photo London with Marie-Claudine (Guerin Projects). It’s been a great pleasure to look back on these special moments, and to reminisce on all of the good times. I’ve always been drawn to the hedonism and spontaneity of London nightlife – I never knew what unexpected moment I’d stumble upon. The work would not exist if not for the generosity and creativity of its subjects”

Marie-Claudine Llamas about James D.Kelly: “James’ photos are incredible representations of us all as a community and as individuals. They are so honest, they represent memories which we all have, moments which we have all been a part of whilst at the same time having an extraordinary ethereal quality. Their vivacity and joy are extremely uplifting, which is crucial in the time in which we live now.”
